{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with F1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he barely escaped a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when a pair of track officials ran across the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident occurred on the third lap when marshals were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his broken nose section
Competitor's Live Reaction
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two guys running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a failure in communication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track track officials can be allowed to just sprint across the track in that manner. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"
Governing Body Reviewing
F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is actively examining the situation
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the FIA
"In the third rotation, track officials were notified and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once all cars had passed"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch marshals were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was displayed in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what transpired after that point"
